If you just saw a positive result on a pregnancy test, your mind might be racing with questions. It is a moment that can feel overwhelming, and it is completely normal to feel like you need to make a decision quickly. However, the best way to move forward is with clear, accurate information and a supportive team by your side. At My Life Health Clinic, we are here to help you navigate these first steps with compassion and medical education.
The Essential First Step: An Ultrasound
Before you make any final decisions, there are a few things your body needs to tell you. While a home pregnancy test is a great starting point, a medical-grade test followed by an ultrasound is the essential first step for any woman considering her options.
An ultrasound is vital because it confirms three key pieces of information:
- Viability: Is the pregnancy progressing? Up to 25 percent of all pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. If the pregnancy is not viable, you may not need any medical procedure at all.
- Gestational Age: How far along are you? This is crucial because it determines which options are available to you.
- Location: Is the pregnancy located inside the uterus? An ectopic pregnancy, which occurs outside the uterus, is a life-threatening medical condition that requires immediate care. The abortion pill does not terminate an ectopic pregnancy.

Understanding the Abortion Pill
Many women who are early in their pregnancy consider a medication abortion, often referred to as the abortion pill. This process typically involves two different medications taken over a 24 to 48 hour period.
The first medication works by blocking progesterone, a hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue. The second medication causes the uterus to contract and empty. This method is typically used only within a specific timeframe of the first trimester. Understanding the physical process and potential risks is an important part of your decision-making journey.
Considering Your Overall Health
Your reproductive health involves more than just the pregnancy itself. Before undergoing any procedure, it is important to be aware of your health status. At My Life Health Clinic, we provide limited testing for specific concerns, such as certain STIs.
If an infection is present and left untreated during a medication or surgical procedure, it can increase the risk of complications like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Taking the time to get tested ensures you are prioritizing your long-term wellness.
