Ultrasounds
A positive pregnancy test can bring up a lot of questions and mixed emotions. Whether you are considering your options or already have a plan in mind, a urine test only gives you one piece of information. Your best next step to protect your health and get the answers you need is to receive a limited obstetric ultrasound.
At My Life Health Clinic, we offer free, ultrasounds in a safe and completely confidential environment.
Why is an Ultrasound So Important?
A pregnancy test simply confirms the presence of the hCG hormone in your system. However, it cannot tell you about the health or the specific details of the pregnancy. An ultrasound provides three crucial pieces of medical information:
1. Is the pregnancy viable? Up to one in four early pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. It is possible to get a positive pregnancy test even if a miscarriage has already begun. An ultrasound checks for a fetal heartbeat to confirm whether the pregnancy is viable and actively progressing.
2. How far along are you? Knowing the exact gestational age of the pregnancy is vital. If you are considering your options, the number of weeks you have been pregnant determines what choices are legally and medically available to you.
3. Is my pregnancy in the uterus? Sometimes a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate medical intervention.
Do I Need an Ultrasound Before an Abortion?
Yes, receiving an ultrasound is highly recommended before making any final decisions.
If you are considering an abortion, an ultrasound protects both your health and your finances. Because a significant number of early pregnancies end in natural miscarriage, an ultrasound will tell you if an abortion procedure is even necessary. Furthermore, an ultrasound determines exactly how many weeks pregnant you are. This specific timeline dictates whether you are eligible for the abortion pill or if a surgical procedure would be required. NOTE: The abortion pill and surgical abortion do not terminate an ectopic pregnancy.
Our team will give you all the facts about your pregnancy present to you your options, so you can make an informed decision.
